Final stages

The bench is painted! I plan to use the motifs already incorporated in the bench to create a design which will be made into the seat cushion. I am pleased with the result so far!

Preparing the bench

In order to prepare the bench for painting, I decided to remove the old paint layers to achieve a smooth finish. Using a combination of an electric sander, heat gun and sand paper, i removed as much paint as possible, as shown below. I then undercoated the bench with a white primer, before sanding by hand with a fine paper.

In order to scale my design to the bench, I scanned my pattern into photoshop, pasting it into the bench shape, which i had previously set to the correct size. This was then printed using the plotter, allowing me to use the paper as a stencil using graphite paper.

Beginning to paint the bench

As i wanted the pattern on the bench to be in a light colour, I had to use this as a base, and paint the inverse pattern, as the yellow would not cover the darker purple.

The image below shows the first side of the bench complete, which i am pleased with. I then repeated the same process on the other side as I wanted each side to be identical.

I painted the remainder of the bench using a small roller, in order to keep the paint as smooth as possible. I then used the same process as I had previously to add pattern to the back panel.

Fabric drop design.

Continuing with the darker colour scheme, I have continued to develop existing drawings into new designs. this particular design was initially designed to be a wallpaper, although I think it would be more suited to being a fabric drop, as the design itself is quite busy. The image above shows the design in two different colour ways and is still to be developed slightly in order to create the perfect layout.

The  image below shows the detail in this particular design. As mentioned earlier, this is still to be developed and the horse element needs to be manipulated further.

Design Inspiration- Clarke And Clarke.

This particular design by  Clarke & Clarke (£107.00) Originally inspired me whilst designing this piece.  As I liked the idea of creating a design in a striped form. My original design consisted only of the grey and white 'stripe' and the faded element in the background was added later, to add detail to the design, much like Clarke and Clarke have added a lighter stripe element in this design.

Degree Show Planning

I have decided to design a fabric cushion base for a church pew, which i will also paint with designs.

I plan to paint the pew in a base colour of either blue or green, in relation to my colour palete. However, I need to design more pieces in order to make my final decision. At this point i also plan to make the seat cushion from digitally printed fabric with a memory foam filling

Design Inspiration- Matthew Williamson

I have collected a range of inspiration in relation to design layout. This particular piece by Matthew Wiliamson had inspired me to create my next wallpaper design from my exisiting paintings and drawings.

After playing with different scale, layout and colour ways, the design shown to the right is still being developed, although I like the design so far. the image to the left shows the design in its first stages. I also found some of my initial drawings needed to be re-drawn in a simpler form, to allow me adapt the colours easier using Photoshop.

Design Inspiration - Kandola

I particulary liked the colours in this design, which inspired me to try different colours in my designs. I like the idea of working with darker colours, rather than the lighter colours my designs usually include. I think this worked well on this particular piece.

Design Inspiration- Farrow & Ball

Inspired by pieces such as this wallpaper by Farrow & Ball (£105.00) and my previous design, I have developed more swirls in a similar style to those previosly.

This image shows some sections of the painted pieces i will incorporate into further designs.

Design Ideas- Wallpaper

From my initial drawings, i have began to create sample wallpaper designs. I have manipulated drawings and patterns using photoshop, which I have grouped together to make small pieces.

After creating a 32cm group, I arranged the design into a half drop repeat using photoshop. I have experimented with different colour ways. This particular design is intended for a wallpaper, or a fabric drop, which is aimed at the middle market, for children in particular, although I believe it can be used in different ways in order to create different looks for a wider audience.
